PSV humiliate Liverpool and turn Anfield into ruined fortress

Reading Time: 3min | Thu. 27.11.25. | 10:53

The Reds were so terrible that their fans left the stands even before the end of the match, which the Dutch side dominated and won 4-1

Last season, they were one of the most pleasant surprises in the entire football world, winning the English Premier League dominantly and topping the Champions League table after the league phase with seven wins and only a single defeat.

However, the dreams from the previous campaign became nightmares in the ongoing one, as Liverpool are experiencing a free fall - one of the worst in the past decade.

It seems that ever since the arrival of Jurgen Klopp in 2015, the Reds weren't in such a crisis, this poor and helpless, and the last three games are a clear evidence: three defeats and a 1-10 goal difference!

On top of the two 3-0 losses to Man City and Nottingham Forest in the EPL, another one - the least expected - came in the UCL, as PSV Eindhoven absolutely dismantled Liverpool in their own home, at Anfield, thrashing them 4-1!

After the first half, it seemed that the Reds were experiencing just a minor setback, as they were level with the Dutch side (1-1), but firmly in control. The only PSV's shot, Ivan Perisic's sixth-minute penalty, found the net, while Arne Slot's men had as many as nine attempts, but only one, Dominik Szoboszlai's, hit the mark.

Yet, we got real proof that stats in football are as irrelevant as yesterday's news only after the break, when Liverpool made 18 shots (six on target) and the visitors made only eight (five on target). Still, three of PSV's efforts ended up behind Giorgi Mamardashvili's back, marking the Reds' worst home defeat since Real Madrid's 5-2 triumph in the UCL Round of 16 in February 2023.

However, unlike Vinicius Jr and Karim Benzema back then, last night, Guus Til and the Moroccan Couhaib Driouech (a brace) smashed them.

Interestingly, Liverpool's only loss in the league phase of the previous UCL campaign came in Eindhoven to PSV (3-2), as Slot definitely showed he couldn't cope with the style of football from his homeland.

Nevertheless, the bigger problem for the Dutchman will be keeping his job, as the dissatisfaction is piling up. His team is now 13th in the UCL and 12th in the EPL (with six defeats in the last seven games), and things do not look good, either for the tactician or his crew.

Last night, the fans started leaving the stands even before the referee blew the final whistle, sending a clear message that Slot's days might be numbered. The clash against West Ham in London in three days may be his last chance to retain his coaching position or his last game with the Reds.
