PSG win after the worst performance in 2025

A painful loss to Chelsea in the FIFA Club World Cup prevented PSG from taking a quadruple, a rare achievement even among elite clubs. The Parisians decided to give their players enough rest and met for training only seven days before the Super Cup with Tottenham. The match against the Spurs, which they won on penalties, was their first match after that Chelsea game and they were visible rusty. Quite normal, their second game in this non existing pre-season was the Round 1 away game at Nantes was even worse, but they were lucky enough to score the winner from a deflection: Nantes – PSG 0-1.

This was probably PSG’s worst and most boring display in all 2025 (and maybe even before that), but when Vitinha took a shot from 20 meters, the ball hit Nantes defender and totally changed the direction, giving the visitors and (un)deserved win. Before the winning goal in the 67th minute, only Gonsalo Ramos managed to hit a crossbar in the 42nd minute and that was it. No shots on target for both clubs until the leading goal. Everything before that goal were half-chances in which a player either took a bad shot which went over the bar of a shot was blocked by the footballer from the opposite team, nothing more.

Ligue 1 starts with only one uncertainty - who'll be the second behind PSG?

Luis Enrique has the commodity to run a team which is owned by a foreign state with virtually no spending limits and this team is so stronger than others that he could even lose this game and still be a champion in May 2026. Not to mention that he was playing against Nantes, a team which lost 10 out of their last 13 home games against PSG. In fact, the Qatar team lost only once in their last 41 away matches in Ligue 1 (31W 9D), it was in Strasbourg in May (1-2) and Nantes have been struggling in the last three seasons in Ligue 1, finishing 13th, 14th and 16th.

And yet, they were somehow holding the champions from scoring until that unfortunate deflection. Some will say it’s unfair that PSG won since they played bad, and some will say that the win was deserved as the guests were a better team even without first team players like Dembele, Doue, Hakimi and Nuno Mendes who came only in the last 60 minutes but failed to score too.
