The former North London boss sharply criticised his former club

Ange Postecoglou has delivered a blunt verdict on Tottenham, claiming the club cannot truly be considered a “big” side as he reacted to Thomas Frank’s dismissal at Spurs.

The Australian coach, who was replaced by Frank last summer, offered a scathing critique of the club’s structure and stability, arguing that any manager would find it difficult to thrive in such an environment.

Reflecting on his two-year stint in North London, Postecoglou spoke candidly to The Overlap, questioning Spurs’ self-perception and ambition: "It's not necessarily what they tell you, it's what goes out publicly. Tottenham as a club will say "we're one of the big boys" and the reality is I don't think they are in terms of my experience over the last two years. When Arsenal need players, they spend £100million on Declan Rice. I don't see Tottenham doing that. Not just in my history, pre-dating me."

He also addressed Frank’s exit, suggesting deeper issues extend beyond any single manager: "It's tough and you know that he can't be the only issue at the club, but ultimately that's what we get judged on. They've had world class managers there. They haven't had success. And for what reason? What was the reason for such a major pivot? Thomas is walking but what's his objective? What's the club's objective?"

Frank was dismissed following a 2-1 defeat to Newcastle on Tuesday, leaving Tottenham languishing in 16th place with 29 points after 26 matches, having recorded seven wins, eight draws and 11 defeats.

Last season under Postecoglou, Spurs endured a historically poor domestic campaign, finishing 17th with just 38 points— their lowest tally in Premier League history — though they salvaged their year by winning the Europa League to secure a Champions League berth.

Frank had shown more promise in Europe before his departure, guiding Tottenham into the Champions League knockout stage with a fourth-place group finish.

Postecoglou, who later took over at Nottingham Forest but was dismissed after just 39 days and an eight-match winless run, went on to explain why he views Tottenham as a “curious club.”
