The law enforcement side lost the chance to wrap the year at the top of FKFPL

Kenya Police squandered a commanding two-goal first-half advantage as Kakamega Homeboyz rallied to secure a pulsating 2-2 draw in an entertaining Football Kenya Federation Premier League encounter staged at Bukhungu Stadium on Monday, 22 December.

Police stamped their authority early, producing a dominant opening-half display that saw them deservedly take a two-goal lead through Marvin Nabwire and Charles Ouma.

However, a spirited second-half resurgence from Homeboyz, inspired by Potiphar Odhiambo and substitute Hillary Otieno, ensured the points were shared in a four-goal thriller.

The result proved costly for Police, who missed a golden opportunity to reclaim top spot and instead wrapped up the year fourth on 22 points. Homeboyz, meanwhile, remained sixth on 21 points, just three adrift of leaders Tusker FC.

Both sides entered the contest under pressure to respond to recent setbacks.

Homeboyz were keen to bounce back from last week’s defeat to Gor Mahia, while Police sought redemption following a slip-up against Murang’a Seal and hoped to finish the year in the summit.

The match began cautiously, with neither side willing to overcommit. But Police broke the deadlock against the run of a cagey opening.

Geoffrey Onyango’s well-delivered corner found Brian Musa, whose header was parried by Simon Masaka into the path of Nabwire, and the Harambee Stars midfielder tapped home with composure.

Police nearly doubled their advantage three minutes later when Daniel Sakari’s corner picked out Muyadi Gideon, but his audacious overhead kick was timely cleared by John Omondi.

Homeboyz threatened to level matters shortly after the half-hour mark when Gedeon Bendeka met Omondi’s delivery from a quick restart, only for Job Ochieng to produce a fine full-stretch save.

Police eventually doubled their lead through Charles Ouma following a slick midfield exchange.

Musa released Onyango down the left, and his pinpoint cross was calmly finished by Ouma to make it 2-0.

Sensing danger, Homeboyz coach Patrick Odhiambo made an early change, introducing Eugene Ochieng, whose presence almost paid immediate dividends, though he failed to capitalise on Joshua Nyatini’s inviting set-piece.

After the break, Odhiambo rang the changes again, introducing Hillary Otieno, Oliver Majaka and Henry Omollo,a move that transformed the game.

Ten minutes into the second half, Potiphar reduced the deficit with a stunning 20-yard volley from a set piece, before Hillary struck just two minutes later, pouncing on Silas Abungana’s delivery to restore parity.

Both sides pushed for a winner in an open final half-hour.

Majaka came close for Homeboyz, while Police threatened through substitutes David Simiyu and David Okoth, but decisive goalkeeping and last-ditch defending ensured neither side found a late breakthrough.

In the end, honours finished even, as Police were left to rue missed opportunities and Homeboyz earned a valuable point after a spirited comeback.
