Omala, the league'stop scorer, was left frustrated owing to the clever tactics deployed by Ingwe
The 92nd edition of the Mashemeji Derby failed to produce a winner as a dominant AFC Leopards were left to continue with their seven year wait for a league victory over Gor Mahia after the two sides played to a barren draw at Nyayo National Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
While some players dazzled in what was their first appearance in the Mashemeji Derby, the league's top scorer Benson Omala was kept quiet with AFC Leopards defenders winning the tactical battle on him.
Here's how the players performed in the match.
AFC Leopards
Levis Opiyo - 5
Stayed comfortable all game long in between the sticks as his former club failed to test him.
Lewis Bandi - 6
Completely kept Boniface Omondi out of the game with his astute defending in the left back position. Looked solid in defending and composed on the ball as always.
Stayed behind a lot of the time and should have provided more threat in joining attack especially when Leopards dominated in the second half.
Robert Mudenyu - 5
Successfully ensured the league's top scorer Benson Omala was kept silent. Did not need to do much in the backline as Gor Mahia's attack was flat.
Kaycie Odhiambo - 6
Making his first start in a match of such stature, the young centre back remained unfazed by the occasion as he produced another composed performance.
His ball playing skills and ability to play from the back was also on show for everyone to see.
Musa Oundo - 6
Another youngster who produced another solid performance on his first Mashemeji Derby start. Was able to snuff out any looming danger in time as he completely limited the dangerous Austine Odhiambo from making any impact in the tie.
Brian Wanyama - 5
Apart from forcing Gad Mathew in the Gor Mahia goal into making a crucial save upon the resumption of the second half, the midfielder did not offer anything concrete in the match going foward. Substituted on the 73rd minute.
Jaffari Owiti - 5
Was one of the bright sparks in the game but failed to make the most out of his chances in the game. Came alive especially in the second half with his energetic runs on the wings.
Cliff Nyakeya - 6
Always looked to make something happen for Ingwe and came close to breaking the deadlock on two ocassions.
Could have been the most likely scorer in the match.
Victor Omune - 4
Subbed off in the 57th minute after completely being outdone by the pace of the match.
Ojo Olaniyi - 5
Lacked the goal scoring threat up front for Leopards. Average performance.
Saad Musa - 6 (Substitute)
Was only on the pitch for less than thirty minutes but was by far the player who took the most initiative in the game. Looked sharp in possession and was always looking up either for the next pass or for the next opportunity to shot on goal. Almost caught Gad with a long range effort that unfortunately just went wide.
Gor Mahia
Gad Mathew - 6
Kept his side in the game whenever he was called upon with crucial saves that denied their sworn enemies.
Paul Ochuoga - 5
Did relatively okay for a first performance in the derby.
Joshua Onyango - 5
Was targeted most of the times and did his possible best to stay cool in the game of such pressure.
Dennis Ng'ang'a - 6
Was unfazed by the occasion and provided steady cover in defense whenever the team looked in any sort of danger.
Covered his partner when needed to and played a huge part in securing the clean sheet and thwarting Leopards.
Geoffrey Ochieng' - 7
Probably the only player who delivered a derby performance all round. Straight from kickoff, the stand in captain showed appetite for the game and fought for every ball on the park.
He chased down everything and was passionate in lifting his side to get into the game.
Track down every ball and thwarted danger whenever AFC Leopards came creeping in their area.
Ernest Wendo - 5
Usual day in office for Wendo who helped in providing stability to the defenders.
Sydney Ochieng - 4
Had to be substituted early in the second half after picking up an injury that cut short his game in midfield.
Austin Odhiambo - 5
Lacked his usual creative edge in the final third consequently leading to Gor Mahia struggling to make an impact in the Ingwe territory.
George 'Blackberry' Odhiambo - 5
Despite being one of the most experienced players on the pitch, the winger did not produce anything out of the ordinary.
Benson Omala - 4
Looked a shadow of himself as he was completely kept out of the game by the Ingwe defensive line.
Gets a low rating because of how poor Gor were in servicing him upfront as he barely had a chance created for him which must have frustrated him.
Boniface Omondi - 5
Despite being the top scoring active player in the Mashemeji Derby with three goals, the diminutive winger struggled to cause any desired threat in the final third.
With his usual ability of taking on defenders well nullified by Lewis Bandi, Omondi was substituted just before the hour mark.
