Penalty gives Alonso his first La Liga win

Mbappe was the sole scorer in a win over Osasuna

Tradition was respected, Real have not lost their opening game of a LaLiga campaign in their last 16 seasons and it continued tonight. Real also didn’t allow Osasuna to leave with any points as this was their 21st game without a defeat the home team, but everything else was worrying. Xabi Alonso’s Real is still not 100%. It was evident at the FIFA Club World Cup and after that the Royal club proceed with their pre-season preparations, but this is far from perfect. Against Osasuna at home, Real wasn’t favorite to score at all, but a defensive mistake allowed Xabi Alonso’s men to record all three points: 1-0.

In a 4-3-3 formation Alonso gave Brahim Diaz a chance over Rodrygo and put Guler with Tchouameni and Valverde in the middle, but Real couldn’t break Osasuna’s defense. New and exciting signing from Brazil Mastantuono was given 20 minutes on his debut but he also couldn’t do anything. Literally nothing happened in the first half, except desperate attempts from Vinicius Jr. to force a penalty kick. It didn’t work in the first half and if we had to single out something, two chances stood out. In the 27th minute Vinicius broke down the left and played a pass back to Mbappe, who unleashes a weak shot. Eights minutes later Brahim put it in, Valverde touched it with his head, Boyomo cleared it and Mbappe, with hardly any space, managed to get a shot off that went very close to Sergio Herrera's post.

Everything was going fine for the guests in the first 45 minutes. Boyomo was superb on clearances, Osasuna played great defensively while Real Madrid didn’t really troubled Sergio Herrera. But just as the second half started, Real got the penalty. Mbappe was quicker than his keeper and went into the penalty area. Juan Cruz went to the ground and brought Mbappe down. Osasuna defender was complaining, but the replay gave him away. He went to the ground, but misses the cut, and hit Mbappe low. The French striker was precise and the home team was finally in the lead. The rest was just the same as in the first half – boring and without opportunities.
