John Textor and his clubs cannot catch a break! Botafogo did a decent job at the FIFA Club World Cup, but the defeat to Palmeiras in the Round of 16 significantly spoiled the impression. Olympique Lyon are still fighting to avoid relegation to Ligue 2. And now Crystal Palace are expelled from the Europa League and demoted to the Conference League!

Earlier today, UEFA made the decision to demote the London side for breaching the multi-club ownership rule, as Lyon have also qualified for the second-tier European competition.

Given that Textor owns 43% of Palace's stakes and 77% of Lyon's, the Eagles argued that the American businessman had no decisive influence at the club, but UEFA "didn't buy it."

The owner tried to solve this issue by selling his stake to another US entrepreneur, Woody Johnson, but that deal hasn't been completed yet, and Palace paid the price.

The club from Selhurst Park will undoubtedly appeal the decision to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, but if it remains unchanged, Nottingham Forest will take its UEL place.

That wouldn't be an ultimate disaster for Palace, as they would still participate in a European competition for only the second time in their history, though it wouldn't be what they deserved after winning the FA Cup.
