Own goal of the season damages Lyon's European hopes

Future Chelsea player Malo Gusto was the guilty party in a 2-1 loss

During the winter transfer window, Chelsea bought the 19-year-old right back Malo Gusto from Lyon for 30,000,000 euros, and left him on loan to France until the end of the season. But when he scored arguably the worst own-goal of the season in a 2-1 defeat from Marseille, fans flocked the social networks in order to mock the young player, claiming that he will fit well in Chelsea environment, which is currently a losing one. To be totally fair to the youngster, he was just at the wrong place at the time, and a terrible clear-out shot by Diomante hit him before it went to the goal, but nevertheless, it’s somehow sad that this was the goal which probably ended Lyon’s Europe hopes.

Olympique de Marseille claimed a 2:1 victory, the first in Lyon after almost 16 years, and returned to second place in the League, ahead of Lens, who is their main competitor for that spot, since PSG has all but claimed another Ligue 1 title. On the other hand, the hosts have damaged their chances for European football, as they are now six points away from the Conference League spot, which is currently occupied by Lille. In order to somehow fulfill the desired goal, they will have to find another player in Lyon who will score goals, apart from Alexandre Lacazette. The former Arsenal striker remained in the race for the league's top scorer with a goal in the 68th minute. He is currently on 21 goals, one less than the leading Kylian Mbappe, and the same number as Lille's Canadian Jonathan David. In 2023 alone, Lacazette was accurate 14 times.
