Mathare, Vihiga Bullets and Wazito started the season late

Despite the 2008 league champions Mathare United starting the current season on the wrong footing, the club's attacking midfielder Chris Owino opines that the outfit will perform well in the subsequent matches and achieve a respectable finish at the end.

The slum boys who managed to patch up a squad on time after months of inactivity lost 2-1 to the flourishing Nzoia Sugar in their opening match of the season played last week at the Utalii grounds.

Mathare have been surviving relegation by a whisker in the past three seasons due to poor display on the pitch which has been partly been attributed to financial struggles.

Owino who joined the club after parting ways with FC Talanta believes that they will recover from the poor start and catch up with the top teams.

The midfielder regretted that lack of match fitness and cohesion between the players cost them three points against the sugar men but noted that the past days had afforded them the space to work on the weak areas.

"Just because we lost our first match of the season does not mean that we are doomed. I am sure we will perform well in the coming matches and finish in the top half of the table," he said.

Owino who is making a return to the top flight after four seasons in the meantime said he was banking on his individual performance to get a call up to the national team, Harambee Stars in the new year.

The former Wazito man was part of the national U20 team that won silver in the 2019 CECAFA Challenge held in Uganda.

"I have played in the junior national teams before and my focus is to be drafted in the senior one in the new year. I reckon that I will have a good season that will see me get a call up," he added.
