Fresh from reclaiming the FKF Premier League title from Kenya Police FC, K'Ogalo are set to return to continental football next season through the CAF Champions League.

The record Kenyan champions will begin their campaign in the preliminary rounds, with a goal of reaching the group stage for the first time in the competition's history.

No Kenyan club has ever reached the group stage of the CAF Champions League, but Owalo believes Gor Mahia have what it takes to break new ground and challenge for Africa's biggest club prize.

In an interview, the patron said the team's ambitions should extend beyond simply taking part in the competition.

"The Gor Mahia of 1987 brought home a continental title. There is no reason why the Gor Mahia of 2026 cannot replicate them," said Owalo.

The 1987 Gor Mahia team remains the benchmark for Kenyan club football after winning the African Cup Winners' Cup, the only major continental trophy ever won by a Kenyan side.

Owalo believes the current squad can write its own chapter in history and restore the club's status among Africa's elite.

"We are not just going to participate in the CAF Champions League, but we want to make history," he added.

The former ICT Cabinet Secretary also pledged the club's full backing to the technical bench as preparations begin for a demanding domestic and continental campaign.

He revealed that discussions on strengthening the squad are already underway, with management ready to provide the resources needed to compete at the highest level.

"The technical bench is working on suggestions of players they may want to join our camp. We will be ready to support them to achieve milestones and make Gor Mahia one of the greatest teams in Africa," he said.

Away from the pitch, Owalo reiterated his commitment to delivering one of the club's long-standing dreams: owning a stadium.

He disclosed that efforts to secure land for the project are at an advanced stage and expressed confidence that the dream will become a reality during his tenure as patron.

The patron, who succeeded the late Raila Odinga in October 2025, said the club has encountered challenges in acquiring land with proper ownership documents but remains optimistic of a breakthrough.

"We have had issues with getting land with authentic documents, but I can assure you that we are at an advanced stage, and I will ensure Gor Mahia has its own stadium while I am still the patron," he told Citizen Digital.
