Defensive midfielder Bernard Ouma has tipped the Kenyatta University football team to clinch the International University Sports Federation (FISU) World Cup set to be played in October in China.
The second edition of the tournament is scheduled to run between October 21 to 31 in Jinjiang, China.
The Kenyatta University football team that is commonly known as Hardnuts qualified for the World Cup after claiming the 2022 All Africa University (FASU) Football trophy on home soil.
The Kenyans recovered from a goal down to edge Makerere University Business School (MUBS) 2-1 at the Kenyatta sports grounds on June 10, 2022.
Ouma who locally plays for Nairobi United said the team had the mettle to deliver the global title and further, the players were determined to achieve it after tasting the benefits which accompanied by winning the African title.
“We will bring the World Cup to Nairobi. We have been preparing for the tournament for a while and I believe we have what it takes to win it,” said Ouma who is a third-year undergraduate student pursuing Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and Sociology degree at Kenyatta University.
Hardnuts will come up against the Myongji University (Korea) who will be representing the Asian continent.
University of la Matanza (Argentina) will be representing the larger US region with the University of Split (Croatia) and Ramon Llull University (Spain) both representing Europe.
Western Sydney University (Australia) which represents the Oceania will also play the Kenyan boys.
Other players who feature for the Hardnuts include offensive midfielder Price Musebe who also features for the Green Commandos, former Kariobangi Sharks midfielder Frankline Sileh and 3K FC captain Ian Owiti who also doubles up as the Hardnuts’ skipper.
Nairobi United’s Brian Ogutu also, plays for the Hardnuts.
The Kenyan side that is under the tutelage of Tobias Ocholla is expected to jet out on October 18.
Ouma, joined Nairobi United in 2021 from Black Diamond Rangers and would join the Gor Mahia Youth team the following year.
He was subsequently promoted to the senior team but the move was quickly reversed as Gor couldn’t register new players back then due to the player transfer ban imposed on the club by FIFA.
Nairobi United, are set to debut in the National Super League (NSL) in the new season after overcoming Zoo FC in the Division One playoff.
