Osula's revenge to United after 12 years

Newcastle United's striker scored a winner against a team which saw his qualities but didn't sign him

‘Manchester United Soccer Schools’ (MUSS) is the official provider of global and domestic coaching, coach education programmes and football experiences for the club's commercial partners. Since it began in 1999, Manchester United have created and delivered and a full range of football activities for over 500,000 participants. These participants range from boys, girls and coaches from the grassroots, academy and national game to club partner customers, staff and clients, from across the UK and over 90 different countries. So fare the club operated in 250 towns and cities, in 65 countries. And one of their winners was a certain William Osula.

Way back in 2014, United organized one of these events within the programme and the winner that day was 11-years old boy from Denmark, who won in the category of Soccer Schools World Skills. Almost 12 years later, that same Osula showed his skills and defeated United with a stunning strike from inside the box in the 90th minute. What’s worse for United is that they had one man on the field for the entire half but still went home defeated thanks’ to Osula’s skills. In 2014, Osula was still back in his native Denmark, where he was born from Danish mother and a Nigerian-French father.

Nobody was interested in the young footballer after the MU Soccer School that day and he went to Copenhagen where he played in the club’s academy before switching to Sheffield United in 2018. He was eventually picked up by Newcastle United in 2024 as the long-term project due to his skills, which finally showed up on Wednesday night. Just like against Crystal Palace the week before, Manchester were blessed with terrible referees’ decisions and had advantage on the field for the whole 45 minutes, since Jacob Ramsey was sent off. But Osula came in and after just five minutes on the field scored a stunning winner.

After the game, coach Eddie Howe revealed one interesting detail from Newcastle’s last training before the Manchester game.

"Will asked after training yesterday for 10 more balls. He wanted 10 more finishes and a carbon copy of the goal he scored today. He scored eight out of 10. That's all credit to the player because he wanted it, he wanted to do more before he went in. I'm a great believer in 'do the work, you get the reward'. Delighted for him personally" said the Magpies boss. And one more interesting detail: Osula was on the verge of a loan transfer to Frankfurt twice: at the end of the June transfer window in 2025 and in December the same year. The player agreed personal terms with the Bundesliga club and the deal with Newcastle was supposed to be a loan with an option to buy for around 20 million pounds, but the Magpies refused in the end. Good decision.
