The former goalkeeper has since transitioned into coaching
After months of speculation, former Kakamega Homeboyz goalkeeper Godfrey Oputi has announced his retirement from competitive football.
Oputi who has since transitioned into coaching, last played at a competitive level in the first leg of the past season with Homeboyz before leaving the club in the mid-season transfer window.
He kept low after exiting the Homeboyz camp only to resurface before the start of the current season on Luanda Villa’s technical bench, where he has been serving as an assistant to Tom Tera.
Oputi told Mozzart Sport that he used the better part of last season’s work on his transition from playing to coaching.
“I can confirm that I elected to retire from competitive football before the start of the current season. After I left Homeboyz, I returned home to handle family matters that required my presence and, at the same time, laid the foundation for my coaching career after enrolling for the CAF D coaching course,” he revealed.
Villa are in their maiden season in the National Super League, having won the FKF Division One Zone B league last season and consequently gained promotion to the second tier.
The club is yet to lose a game this season, as are fellow debutants Nairobi United.
Asked what might have triggered him to hang his gloves and boots at his peak, Oputi who launched his career at AFC Leopards in 2009, said his passion for coaching proved strong.
He conceded that he felt strong enough to grace the Kenyan topflight for eight more years but had to answer the call to coaching.
“I am passionate about coaching. Much as I quit playing early, I am happy that I haven’t deserted the game, as I have something to offer budding players. I always knew once I was done with active football as a player, I would fall for coaching,” he said.
Besides Homeboyz and Leopards, Oputi who is hoping to lay hands on the CAF C coaching badge, soon played for Nakuru All Stars twice and wore the Vihiga United shirt in three different spells.
Oputi also played for the defunct Palos as well as KCB Rush United, which later rebranded to Vihiga United.
Vihiga have since rebranded to Mulembe United.
