Kakamega Homeboyz midfielder Stephen Opoku breathed a sigh of relief after scoring his first goal of the season in the 5-0 drubbing of Sofapaka to end his long-running dry spell.

Opoku, who made his first start of the season, drew the first blood in the match after heading past Sofapaka's custodian, Bruce Omweno, from Eston Omengo's corner kick delivery.

The Ghanaian international rejoined Abana Abeingo at the beginning of the current campaign after sitting out for the entire second leg of the previous season due to the expiry of his initial two-year contract with the club.

Opoko replaced Hillary Otieno, who missed the clash due to a nagging knee injury despite featuring in Homeboyz's 2-0 win against Muhoroni Youth.

The former Singida midfielder, who was one of the best-scoring midfielders for the club in the 2021–2022 Football Kenya Federation Premier League, said he was happy to score after a long while and remained optimistic about making it a routine in front of the goal.

"I thank God for the goal last week. I have been personally putting in lots of hard work, and I am glad my efforts finally paid off. This is just the beginning, and I am very confident this is going to be a routine because I believe in being rewarded for one's hard work," he stated.

Opoko, who's known for his quick feet and dribbling skills, also voiced his thoughts on the team's performance, saying the win was a soirce of motivation to the playing unit.

"We have been getting results, but not in a consistent way. Nonetheless, I am glad we finally made it two consecutive wins last Friday. The win definitely inspires motivation in the team, and I am convinced we will continue from Sofapaka and have a great outing in the upcoming fixtures," he concluded.

Opoko will be hoping to make it two consecutive starts in the season when Homeboyz next take on Ulinzi Stars after the break.
