Hair-pull dismissal sparks outrage as VAR call overshadows United defeat
Lisandro Martinez saw red - and Michael Carrick saw red mist.
The Manchester United defender was sent off in the 2-1 defeat to Leeds United after being judged to have pulled the hair of Dominic Calvert-Lewin in an off-the-ball incident.
Referee Paul Tierney initially missed it, but after a VAR review, he went to the monitor and upgraded the decision to a straight red for violent conduct.

That's when the real storm began.
"That decision is one of the worst I've ever seen," Carrick fumed after the game on Monday night. "He gets hit in the face, loses balance… and then he's sent off? Shocking."
The United boss couldn't hide his disbelief.
"It's not a pull, not aggressive. He barely touches him. And that's 'a clear and obvious' error? We've got to be careful where this game is going."
Calvert-Lewin, meanwhile, kept it simple:
"I felt my hair get pulled. The referee made the decision."
The red card leaves Martinez facing a three-match ban, and United potentially short at the back again, with defensive options already stretched.
But the bigger issue? The decision itself. Because long after the final whistle, it wasn't the result people were talking about; it was the call that lit the fuse.
