Al Duhail will have themselves to blame as they enjoyed a 2-0 lead up to the 85th minute of the game

Harambee Stars captain Michael Olunga endured a frustrating day at the office as his goal was not enough to send his side, Al Duhail, to the semifinals of the Emir Cup.

Olunga and Al Duhail squandered a two-goal lead, settling for a 2-2 draw against Al Rayyan in regular time before suffering a 5-4 defeat in the post-match penalty shootout.

Duhail took the lead in the 24th minute through Edmilson Junior, with Olunga combining with the latter to double the advantage in the 57th minute.

The visitors thought they had gotten the job done after holding on to the two-goal cushion for the better part of the game staged at the Jassim Bin Hamad Stadium.

However, Roger Guedes had other thoughts as he halved the deficit in the 85th minute, setting up an interesting and nervy finish to the encounter.

Guedes broke Al Duhail fans’ hearts after striking from the spot in the 90+8th minute to level matters, and at the same time pushed the match into extra time.

Guedes, Adam Bareiro, Trezeguet, Rodrigo Tabata, and Julian De Sart were all on target for Al Rayyan, while Abdullah Al Arhrak missed for Al Duhail.

Benjamin Bourigeaud, Homam Ahmed, Lucas Verissimo, and Bassam Al Rawi scored their penalties.

In another quarterfinal match played on Wednesday night, Al Gharafa beat Al Sadd 5-4 on post-match penalties after a 2-2 draw in regular time.

It was not a pleasant working day for another Stars player in Jonah Ayunga, as his club, St. Mirren, drew Hibernian 2-2 in a Scottish Premiership match played at the SMISA Stadium.

Ayunga, who was cautioned in the 56th minute, clocked full time in the match in which Mirren came down twice to pick up a point.

Martin Boyle and Mykola Kuharevich were on target for Hibernian in the third and tenth minutes of the game.

Mirren responded through Richard Taylor and Conor McMenamin.
