The central defender missed action for a week after being involved in a collision last week

Harambee Stars defender Joseph Okumu has for the first time been included back in KAA Gent’s matchday squad ahead of the team’s Sunday night encounter against Genk in the Belgian Pro League.

Just over a week ago on 4 December, the Kenyan international was forced off the pitch after only 31 one minutes when he came out on the bad side of a collision in the game against Leuven.

“Okumu suffers too much from a collision with Kaba and is replaced by Godeau,” the club posted an update when he was taken off from the game.

Due to the injury, the 24 year old missed his team’s midweek UEFA Europa Conference League encounter against Flora but Gianni Bruno’s strike confirmed what had already been an assured progression to the round of 16 of the third tier European competition. At the time, the club did not provide any update on the extent of Okumu’s injury or whether it was just a cautionary measure.

However, on Sunday morning, the club announced that Okumu was back available and was included in the 20 man matchday squad set to battle it out against Genk.

"Selection news for Gent, Okumu and Kums are back," the club posted an update.

In the match taking place at their home stadium at the Ghelamco Arena, Okumu's side will be looking to keep up with their current impressive form where they are currently on a four match winning streak in all competitions.

On the other hand, Genk are on a torrid six match winless run and will again face a tough test when they go visiting against a Gent side five points ahead of them. Okumu will also be hoping to make a swift return to the starting eleven when the lineup for the match is announced.

The game kicks off at 2045EAT.
