Lyon face their rivals, desperate for a win - but burdened with problems on and off the pitch
Olympique Lyonnais is still one of the biggest French clubs, but their recent fortunes tell a different story. Last season, they finished seventh in Ligue 1, nearly 30 points behind winners PSG. Today, they host the Parisians in desperate need for something positive to happen at Parc Olympique Lyonnais.
OL won just a point from their opening three games and are third-bottom in the standings, there is a legal battle brewing between the new and the previous owner, one of the best young players has signed for a rival team - and the fans are angry. Not an ideal scenario - especially with the best team in France coming to play them tonight.
French legend and current OL boss Laurent Blanc admitted there isn't a good time to face PSG.
"It's good that we're playing at home, but maybe Paris isn't the best team to bounce back against."

However, the Lyon coach, who was in charge of PSG between 2013 and 2016, hopes that this match will help rectify mistakes from the early stage of the season. He emphasized the need to avoid collective and individual errors on set pieces, among other things, expressing satisfaction with the week of training the team had with a good spirit.
The club from the River Rhone is undergoing yet another period of turmoil. Former owner and president Jean-Michel Aulas is demanding the new owner, American businessman John Textor, pays him the money according to the takeover agreement. The relationship between the two parties has significantly deteriorated. The Lyon commercial tribunal ordered the freezing of $15.7 million, representing a portion of the money owed to Aulas concerning his shares in the club. In response, Lyon expressed deep regret and accused Aulas of initiating a damaging and illegitimate attack on the club.
Blanc must drown out all the noise and focus on the sporting side of his job. And he has no intention to be paralyzed by the poor start of the season of by the prospect of facing the reigning champions.
"I haven't seen any fear in training. I have confidence for Sunday. We need to be at 100 per cent. Otherwise, it will be difficult to take three points against Paris. We shouldn't be afraid to play because it's through playing that we can kickstart our season. They will want the ball, but we shouldn't just defend. When we have the ball, we need to play to put them in trouble."
On the offensive side, the Lyon coach will need to innovate. Alexandre Lacazette is still suspended, Bradley Barcola has left - ironically to PSG. But Mama Balde and Ernest Nuamah will be in the squad and can bring their speed and enthusiasm, two qualities that have been sorely lacking in the team so far this season.
As for PSG, they have finally found their rhythm with a 3-1 victory against Lens last weekend after drawing against Toulouse and Lorient.
With the international break on the horizon, defeating PSG would be a good way to finally kickstart OL's season. Especially since autumn looks favourable for Lyon, with upcoming matches against Le Havre, Brest, and Reims by early October. Les Lyonnais beat PSG at Parc des Princes last season, so it's not an impossible task.
