Oboya Cup: Ping seek podium finish after semis defeat

Team Ping suffered a 2-0 loss at the hands of MUFYA FC in the first semi-final of the Patrick Oboya Cup with head coach Alex Kibena now aiming for a third-place finish. 

The Riruta Satellite-based outfit will face South B United after the latter were ousted out of the tournament by Rongai FC in the second semi-final played on Sunday 5 December.

Speaking to Mozzart Sport, Kibena rued missed chances in the game against MUFYA but credited his opponents for handing them a run for their money.

“We lost the match because of our own mistakes, they are a good team but I think the referee had funny calls. That however does not change the fact that MUFYA are a good team and we lost,”

“We enjoyed the game and the semi-finals was a good one between two prepared sides and one of them took their chances, we will try our best to finish third in the tournament,” said Kibena. 

The third-place playoffs is pencilled for Saturday 11 December at the Police Band Grounds in South B with the finals set for a day later. 

Having played in Koth Biro, Dennis Oliech Cup, Kris Darling Super Cup and now Patrick Oboya Cup Kibena opened up on why his team has made it a habit of featuring in Grassroot tournaments. 

“When you watch Ping, players who played for us three years ago are no longer with us because we usually take young players, my team now has an average age of 24,”

“If you make it a habit to put the young players in competitive tournaments football in the country will grow,” added Kibena.
