Nzoia lost a large chunk of its playing unit after impressing last season and are currently on a restructuring mission

Football Kenya Federation Premier League outfit Nzoia Sugar FC are one of the most engaged clubs in the on going player registration window, they started by outgoing and now are in a rush to bring in new machines before the season kicks off.

One of the most sort positions at Sudi based club is the goalkeeping department that was in dire need of reinforcement after departure of Humphrey Katasi to twelve times Kenyan Premier League champions AFC Leopards and retirement of experienced Benson Mangala.

According to club's custodians expert Erick Wasike, Nzoia who finished fourth last season on 64 points, have reached an agreement with former Vihiga Bullets keeper Benard Onunga to join the team that is currently restructuring.

"We have an agreement with Onunga and he will put pen to paper on Monday," offered Wasike.

The former Vihiga United man linked up with the sugar millers at the start of the week and impressed in training sessions prompting coaching staff to land on him among a number of players who had turned up for trials.

Onunga spent last season at National Super League side Gusii FC, where he joined from relegated Vihiga Bullets and quickly beat Meshack Monari for a starting role at the Gusii holed team.

He was among the best performing goalkeepers in the second tier coming third behind Shabana's Mustapha Odour and Seal's Wilson Mwangi accumulating thirteen clean sheets in 28 league matches.

The goalkeeper is known for being very comfortable with the ball at his feet, braveness to receive the ball and pass under pressure and the ability to scan the pitch and identify the best passing options, which make him amongst the best modern-day custodians in the Kenyan football.

"He is comfortable on the ball and has the passing ability - these are what made me feel he is the right man to replace Katasi," said Wasike.

Nzoia Sugar are expected to tie down all their new signings on Monday with eight days left before the start of 2023-2024 FKF Premier League campaign.

The millers new arsenal will be put to test on Sunday as they entertain premier league returnees Shabana at Sudi Stadium, Bungoma in a pre-season friendly match.

George Odour troops will start the season at home against Ulinzi Stars on the weekend of 26th -27th August.
