Vincent Kompany weighs options as Gladbach look to disrupt the Bundesliga leaders' rhythm in Allianz Arena showdown (10.30 pm)
Harry Kane is Bayern Munich's talisman.
When he isn't on the pitch, the team's winning aura fades - at least, that's what the numbers suggest. And this Friday night, Kane will miss the Bundesliga clash with Borussia Monchengladbach at the Allianz Arena.
The English striker has been amazing this season: 45 goals in 37 appearances across all competitions, including 30 in 24 Bundesliga games. With ten matches to go, Kane is chasing Robert Lewandowski's record of 40 league goals in a single season, but missing tonight reduces his chances.
Asked if he would bet on himself to break the record, Kane said:
"I'd rather people bet on me. I'm in a good position, but it will be very hard. Lewandowski missed some games that season but scored many hat-tricks. The odds are fairly even."
Kane's absence follows a cut on his left calf sustained in the 3-2 derby win over Borussia Dortmund. Bayern will feel his absence: in 133 matches with Kane, the club has scored 130 goals, missing him only nine times.
In those nine games, Bayern won four, drew one, and lost four, averaging just 1.44 points per match.
Without Kane, the Bavarians have also suffered in the DFB-Pokal, eliminated by Saarbrucken in 2023 and by Leverkusen last year, while Bundesliga losses include Hoffenheim (4-2) and Mainz (2-1).
The good news: Kane is expected to return by Tuesday for Bayern's first-leg Champions League tie against Atalanta. Meanwhile, coach Vincent Kompany must decide who will start tonight. Options include Nicolas Jackson or Serge Gnabry.
Statistically, Bayern thrive in Friday evening Bundesliga games. Of 15 matches, they have won 12 and drawn three, with the last defeat coming in January 2022, 2-1 against Monchengladbach. Since 2000, this remains their only Friday loss, alongside 27 wins and five draws.
Kompany remains calm despite Kane's absence.
"We've had an 11-point lead before, and we know how quickly it can shrink. We're focused on our game and winning. The table looked good after Dortmund, but now all that matters is Monchengladbach."
Goalkeeper Manuel Neuer is finally ready to start.
Gladbach, meanwhile, will fight hard. Coach Eugen Polanski said:
"We need to disrupt their rhythm - press, stay compact, drop into a low block. When we have the ball, we must create problems for Bayern. Kane not playing doesn't change our approach. Bayern have top players in every position."
The visitors are fighting for survival: just three points above 16th-placed Werder Bremen, every point matters in the battle to stay up. Bayern, meanwhile, enter the game on a five-match winning streak across all competitions, including a 3-0 victory at Gladbach in October.
