Even as the country pauses for seven days of mourning, some clubs have used the break to restructure their technical benches in preparation for the league’s resumption next week

The National Super League (NSL), like all sporting activities in Kenya, remains suspended as the nation mourns the passing of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.

However, even as the country pauses for seven days of mourning, some clubs have used the break to restructure their technical benches in preparation for the league’s resumption next week.

Mwatate United are set to reappoint Evans Mafuta as head coach, replacing Martin Mutembei, who will continue to serve as his assistant.

Mafuta returns to a familiar role, having previously handled the team during the 2022/23 season before his move to APS Bomet.

According to sources within the club, Mafuta has already reported to Mwatate and has been observing training sessions this week.

Before returning to Mwatate, Mafuta guided APS Bomet to promotion to the FKF Premier League after finishing second in last season’s second-tier campaign.

However, the club’s top-flight start has been rocky, losing all three opening matches, a run that led to the suspension of head coach Michael Nam, Mafuta (then assistant), and trainer Alfred Chole.

Mwatate, fondly known as Wana Hewa, has endured a tough return to the NSL, failing to win any of its first three matches.

They lost 3-0 to Mully Children Family (MCF), 1-0 to Migori Youth, and drew 2-2 at home against Nzoia Sugar, prompting swift management action.

Elsewhere, Vihiga United have also made adjustments, roping in former Gucha Youth tactician Oscar Kambona as assistant coach to Milton Kidiga.

Kambona, who previously featured for Shabana, earned plaudits after guiding Gucha to promotion from the fourth division last season.

Vihiga have been without a substantive head coach since the departure of veteran Edward Manoah, who left to join FKF Premier League side Mara Sugar.

Kambona is expected to officially link up with the team next week as they prepare to face Gucha Stars at Gusii Stadium.

Like Mwatate, Vihiga United are yet to register a win this season, having drawn twice and lost once in their opening fixtures.
