The club pledged to build on the financial boon and secure automatic promotion to the top tier
Migori Youth announced their intentions to clinch the 2025/2026 National Super League (NSL) title with a slim 1-0 win over a stubborn Mwatate United 1-0 on Saturday afternoon.
The decisive moment came barely two minutes into the game when Kenya U-20 forward Syphas Owour was brought down inside the penalty area by Mwatate captain Chamwoma Gilbert.

Calm under pressure, Owour stepped up and slotted home from the spot, handing the hosts a dream start at a packed Migori Green Stadium.
Migori, buoyed by their home supporters, pushed forward relentlessly in search of a quick second.
Former MOFA attacker Fredrick Ologi nearly doubled the advantage in the fifth minute after pouncing on a poor clearance by Mwatate goalkeeper Assava Bryson, but his volley went inches wide.
Moments later, Churchill Otieno also came close after linking up neatly with Owour, only for Gilbert to intercept his effort.
Mwatate, shaken but unbowed, responded through Juma Bechoni in the 25th minute.
The ex-Sofapaka winger connected with an Enock Ouma's cutback, but his hurried attempt lacked accuracy, much to the relieve of Migori.
Migori continued to dictate the tempo, with Otieno and Owour tormenting the visitors’ backline.
However, wasteful finishing and heroic defending from Gilbert kept the margin at a single goal heading into the break.
The second half picked up in similar fashion, Migori pressing with intent and Mwatate clinging on.
Five minutes after the restart, Owour nearly doubled his tally after capitalising on a spilled shot by Assava, but defender Timothy Omondi produced a spectacular goal-line clearance to keep his side in the tie.
Substitute Kevin Haggai also missed a gilt-edged chance in the 65th minute, heading Otieno’s cross onto the roof of the net.
The final quarter of the game turned into a battle of attrition, with Mwatate tightening their midfield lines.
Yet, Migori’s persistence continued to carve openings, most notably when Owour’s teasing delivery almost forced Onesmus Karisa into an own goal and later when Geoffrey Odira spurned a close-range chance in the dying minutes.
Ultimately, the solitary early strike proved enough, securing Migori all three points and underlining their intent to challenge strongly in this campaign.
