The Murang’a-based side, playing in the NSL for the first time, held former FKF Premier League club Vihiga United to a 1-1 draw.

But beyond the result, it was the electric atmosphere and huge fan turnout that stole the show.

Thika Stadium was packed to the rafters, with thousands of supporters turning up to cheer Kabati Youth in their historic fixture.

The turnout translated into financial gain, with the club pocketing Ksh173,200 in gate collections, each fan having paid Ksh100 at the entrance.

In an X (formerly Twitter) post on Monday, 29 September, Kabati Youth expressed gratitude to their supporters.

“A BIG thank you to all our fans for your support during our debut NSL match yesterday. What an atmosphere you created!! We truly appreciate your cheering on the boys as well as the incredible financial support. Blessings upon you!!”

The club’s day belonged to striker Mac Ferran Dominic, who scored the lone goal for Kabati Youth. Speaking after the game, Dominic could not hide his appreciation for the fans.

“The match was great. We did our best, and we hope for the best going forward. As players, we are doing our best to make our FKFPL dreams come true. To our fans, we thank you for your commitment and support,” he said, promising more goals in the campaign.

Head coach Joel Mungai also praised his players for stepping up in their debut NSL outing, but admitted there were lessons to take home.

“The first NSL game, and we are grateful, even though the game ended in a draw and we were at home, it is good progress. In this league, you are punished for your mistakes.

One mistake costs you a lot. We have identified areas to correct. But that will not happen next time. The fans should not be worried. We keep getting better,” Mungai noted.

Kabati Youth will next take on SamWest Blackboots at Vapour Grounds in Ngong.
