An unusual scene - Bayern's backup goalkeeper started the match in the stands but ended up on the bench

An unusual scene unfolded last night in Munich. Bayern’s veteran goalkeeper, Sven Ulreich, came to watch the match against Bayer Leverkusen with his wife, Lisa—but ended up on the bench as a substitute?!

It sounds unbelievable, but that’s exactly what happened. Until the 60th minute, he was in the stands, only to spend the final half-hour alongside his teammates. The reason? Manuel Neuer suffered an injury, forcing backup goalkeeper Jonas Urbig to come on. At that point, Bayern’s coaching staff apparently called Ulreich down to the pitch—just in case.

How was that even possible?

Simply put, Ulreich was listed in Bayern’s squad for the match against Leverkusen. However, since no one expected any complications, he was initially allowed to watch from the stands. When the situation became urgent, he was told to be ready. Had Urbig been unable to finish the match—whether due to injury or a red card—he would have even had to play!

In the end, there was no need for Ulreich to step in, as Bayern Munich managed to secure a favorable result, defeating Bayer Leverkusen 3-0. This victory puts Bayern in high spirits ahead of the return leg, which will be played in Leverkusen. However, knowing Xabi Alonso's team, anything is possible.
