The Super Falcons of Nigeria dominated the 2024 CAF Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) awards after lifting their 10th title.
In a final match played on Saturday, 26 July, at the Stade Olympique de Rabat, Nigeria produced a remarkable second-half comeback to emerge 3-2 victors over hosts Morocco.
Twenty-five-year-old Nigeria attacking midfielder Rasheedat Ajibade, who plies her trade with Spanish side Atletico Madrid, was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player (MVP).
Ajibade, who played the full minutes of the tournament, was a key figure in Nigeria's attack, creating numerous chances for her side and getting a goal and two assists for herself.
Super Falcons custodian Chiamaka Nnadozie won the Golden Glove after conceding just three goals throughout the tournament and keeping four clean sheets in the process.
For guiding Nigeria to their 10th WAFCON title and engineering a comeback in the final, coach Justine Madugu was named the Best Coach of the championship.
Additionally, their final star Esther Okoronkwo, who scored a goal and provided two assists, was named the Player of the Match in the final.
Morocco captain Ghizlane Chebbak won the Golden Boot after netting five goals, including breaking the deadlock in the final.
The 34-year-old won it for the second consecutive time, having claimed the same award in the 2022 edition also held in Morocco.
South Africa, who finished fourth after losing to Ghana in post-match penalties in the third-place playoff, won the Fair Play Award.
During the final, first-half goals from Chebbak and Sanaa Mssoudy in the 13th and 24th minutes respectively gave Morocco a perfect start and a two-goal lead that they took into halftime.
However, a rejuvenated Nigerian side in the second half proved too difficult and rampant for the hosts to handle, with the Madugu-coached side finding the back of the net three times.
Okoronkwo was the star of the half, igniting the comeback through a 64th-minute penalty before assisting in Folashade Ijamilusi’s equalizer seven minutes later.
Okoronkwo was in the mix once again, providing the assist to second-half substitute Jennifer Echegini’s 88th-minute winner.
