It seems that, instead of fighting harder for a place at the World Cup, the Brazilian is sinking deeper and deeper, and that it is becoming more and more out of reach for him

Neymar found himself at the centre of a tense flashpoint with a fan at Vila Belmiro after Santos were jeered off the pitch following a frustrating 1–1 draw with Deportivo Recoleta in the Copa Sudamericana. Although he opened the scoring early, the Brazilian star ended up clashing verbally with a supporter as frustration around the stadium boiled over.

The forward had given Santos a dream start, netting after just four minutes, but Richard Ortiz later equalised from the penalty spot to leave the Peixe bottom of Copa Sudamericana Group E. When the final whistle went, Neymar reacted to the boos from the stands with a “shush” gesture and exchanged heated words with a fan, before an uneasy post-match interview followed.

The disappointing result against the Paraguayan newcomers triggered anger among the home crowd, and things escalated further as Neymar headed towards the tunnel, where he appeared to mock one supporter’s appearance while defending his own performance.

Visibly angered by being labelled “spoiled,” Neymar hit back directly at the fan: "You should have trained more. You're getting chubby! You're right... are you happy now? Am I spoiled? I'm giving my absolute all out here. I'm going to give you your minute of fame."

While he admitted that criticism from supporters is part of football, Neymar argued that the line had been crossed. "I only complained, I didn't argue, I retorted to the fan about the way he spoke to me," he explained. "I understand fans who criticize our game, but when it becomes personal, when he attacks in a different way, I can't accept it. I can't accept it because I'm a very consistent guy, I give my life for football, for this club, I even do more than I should, so I can't be treated this way."

Looking ahead, Neymar remains focused on preparing for what could be his fourth World Cup appearance with Brazil this summer, having recently undergone a follow-up knee procedure to aid his recovery.

In the meantime, Santos face a demanding schedule, starting with a home match against Fluminense on April 19, followed by an important Copa do Brasil clash with Coritiba — fixtures that will test a side low on confidence as Neymar tries to balance club struggles with international ambitions.
