The hard-working Argentine midfielder shows he's nowhere near retirement despite the age
Age is just a number we often hear. And it's not a false statement at all, especially if you consider modern-day football players, who tend to amaze us in their late 30s and even 40s.
Those veterans - like Cristiano Ronaldo, Sergio Ramos, Edinson Cavani, Luka Modric, etc. - prove that the class is eternal. Yes, they are maybe slower than five or six years ago; they fell to the ground easier than once; they can't run like a Road Runner for the entire 90 minutes, but what they deliver on the pitch is a proper football masterclass in its most refined form.
Oh, and they know to score screamers that could easily be described with a simple, three-letter word 'wow'.
Maxi RodrÃguez still playing like life begins at 40 ????

One such beauty we saw as recently as last night in the Argentine Copa de la Liga, in a draw between Newells Old Boys and Sarmiento. The former Diego Maradona's and Marcelo Bielsa's club are struggling at the bottom, but they have something to brag about. It's their household name, and the former Argentine national team star Maxi Rodriguez, 40. Yes, he's a 40-year-old midfielder who shows no signs of decline and willingness to retire.
What he did last night, that fantastic opener at Newells' stadium, was a stunning replica of his earlier belters, like the one against Mexico at the 2006 FIFA World Cup. The former Liverpool player decided to return to his maiden outfit and the homeland itself, and he obviously enjoys it very much.
Just... maybe they should change the club's name now to Newells very Old Boys.
