The Magpies took the lead through Barnes, but Pep Guardiola's side roared back to reach the FA Cup quarter-finals

Omar Marmoush once again proved Newcastle United's tormentor as Manchester City came from behind on Saturday night to secure a place in the FA Cup quarter-finals (1-3).

City manager Pep Guardiola had warned that a trip to the charged atmosphere of St James' Park could turn into a "nightmare", and for a while it looked exactly like that. Harvey Barnes fired Newcastle into the lead and sent the home crowd into raptures in the first half.

However, Manchester City, despite making several changes to the lineup, showed their resilience. Savinho pulled them level before Marmoush took centre stage with a superb brace, continuing his remarkable record against Newcastle - seven goals in just six appearances.

After knocking Eddie Howe's side out of the League Cup last month, City have now also ended their FA Cup dream of another Wembley trip.

Barnes timed his run perfectly to beat the offside trap and collect Sandro Tonali's through ball. With a quick touch onto his favoured right foot, he curled a clinical finish into the far corner, sending St James' Park into celebration (1-0).

The goal, however, only stirred Manchester City into action. Guardiola's men gradually pushed Newcastle deeper and deeper, and the equaliser arrived after a prolonged spell of pressure.

Jeremy Doku drilled a low cross across the box from the left flank. It travelled all the way to the far post where Savinho, completely unmarked, saw the ball strike his knee and bounce over the line (1-1).

Newcastle needed the half-time whistle to steady themselves, but City resumed the second half with the same authority and quickly turned the match around.

Matheus Nunes burst down the right and squared the ball across goal, where Marmoush was waiting at the far post. The Egyptian forward took a composed touch before smashing the ball into the net (1-2).

Only minutes later, he struck again. Marmoush unleashed a thunderous shot from just outside the penalty area, leaving Aaron Ramsdale helpless as the ball flew past him (1-3).

With that decisive spell, Manchester City secured their place in the FA Cup quarter-finals for the eighth consecutive season, and once again, Marmoush was the man Newcastle could not escape.
