"This is the Ballon d'Or for all of Africa," said Fatimata Dembele after her son won the prestigious accolade
Four days ago, Ousmane Dembele became the sixth French footballer to win the Ballon d'Or. At the same time, he's the third Frenchman of African roots to claim the prestigious award after Zinedine Zidane and Karim Benzema.
Even though Dembele was born in Vernon, northern France, his parents are 100% of African descent. His father, Ousmane Sr, is Malian, while his mother, Fatimata, is of Mauritanian and Senegalese roots.
The Liberian George Weah remained officially the only African footballer to win Ballon d'Or, but according to the new laureate's mom, the Mother Continent will get a chance to see the renowned trophy.
Namely, after the ceremony in which her son triumphed, Fatimata Dembele dedicated the accolade to Africa and gave a promise worthy of respect.
"We are going to bring it everywhere, Waly, Senegal... This is the Ballon d'Or for all of Africa," the proud mother said.

Now, Ousmane's schedule is pretty busy until the end of the season, but considering the pride the entire Dembele family apparently feels regarding their African origins, the trophy will undoubtedly travel across the Mediterranean Sea at some point.
Hats off to the Dembeles for never forgetting their roots. That's class.
