So far, Bayern's number one hasn't played a single game in 2023

So far so good. Bayern’s new Bundesliga title run started excellent. Two games, two wins. The long-awaited Harry Kane arrived and already scored three goals. The only thing missing is Manuel Neuer. Bayern made a few mistakes in recent years, but handling the goalkeeper situation is one of them. Sticking strictly with the 37-year old keeper meant all other serious players didn’t want to come and sit on the bench waiting for Neuer to retire. So when he broke a leg, it was a big problem for the Bavarians. They brought in Yan Sommer, but coach Thomas Tuchel wasn’t so happy so he was shipped to Inter after only six months. And then it was revealed that Neuer won’t be able to play for some time. But at least he is back in training.

He did not play a single game in 2023, but he will certainly play one in the second half of the calendar year. On Monday, the German representative did his first training session at the Bavarian giant's complex since he broke his leg while skiing in December. He later had to have an operation, so he had a long recovery, but a combination of his mental strength and individual training sessions over the past few weeks, means that his return between the sticks is not far away. So far, Munich has not announced when that could be, however, some sources state that the timing after the representative break is ideal to see if the experienced goalkeeper can help the team.

Meanwhile, during his absence, a lot happened at Bayern. The club first replaced the long-time goalkeeper coach Toni Tapalović, a great friend of Neuer, and then coach Julian Naglesmann had to go. A few days ago, the Bavarians brought in Daniel Peretz from Maccabi Tel Aviv, who is viewed as the new number one, but in a few years, when Neuer decides to retire.
