Neighborly favor – Girona trips up Real Madrid and helps Barca

The Royal Club’s poor run continues with a third straight league draw, this time 1–1 against Girona

No raised voices, no arguing or accusations. Instead, we saw emotions overflowing and hugs between Kylian Mbappe and Vinicius, as well as between the Brazilian and Xabi Alonso. Love was in the air during the Champions League match in Piraeus. And yes, perhaps those communication issues are now in the past, but the other problems—the ones on the pitch—are still very much present.

No, Real Madrid’s crisis is not behind them. It lives at the Santiago Bernabeu, it hasn’t gone anywhere, and it follows the Royal Club wherever they show up in La Liga. It has been almost a full month since they last won a league match—back on the first day of October.

Once again, they stumbled in the domestic championship, this time earning only a point away at Girona – 1–1 (1–0). For Barcelona, their neighbors, that was a huge gift. First place wrapped up with a big red bow. That’s what they received tonight.

With this draw, Real Madrid handed the top spot to Barcelona and, with a third straight league stalemate, made the coming days and weeks much harder. They were the better team—that’s what all the stats say—but numbers don’t win matches; goals do.

Real Madrid scored tonight, but the goals didn’t count. Mbappe’s first-half strike was disallowed for handball in the box. Later he wanted a penalty, and soon afterward Los Blancos received something else—a cold shower.

Azzedine Ounahi’s goal laid bare how poorly some things function defensively, and Xabi Alonso will surely have a few complaints about Vinicius. It all started with his casual, careless defending. He was jogging, didn’t track his man, the ball went to Viktor Tsygankov, who then slid it forward beautifully…

The Moroccan was completely alone. Not a soul around him, able to pick his spot as he pleased. The result—Thibaut Courtois beaten. Nothing he could do.

Time was running out, Real Madrid threw everything forward and finally equalized—from the penalty spot. Clear as day: Hugo Rincon clumsily tangled with Vinicius Junior, and Kylian Mbappe scored his 14th league goal of the season. He could have even won the match for Real in stoppage time, but shot wide. Girona’s substitute Joel Roca also could have scored earlier.
