Naby Keita shows goalscoring prowess as Liverpool maintain their winning run in Newcastle

The Reds climb over City once more - at least for a few hours

Naby Keita scored the only goal of the match as Liverpool overcame a gritty Newcastle United side to keep their Premier League bid alive.

Jurgen Klopp fielded a rotated starting eleven with the upcoming Villarreal return leg in mind, but this Reds squad has so much quality that it hardly showed as Keita's strike helped the Reds to a victory that puts them top of the league - at least until Manchester City have played Leeds at Elland Road later on Saturday.

The match saw Liverpool dominate possession and create enough chances to put the game beyond doubt much sooner, but have missed a few chances through Luis Diaz and substitute Mohamed Salah.

Former Newcastle midfielder James Milner made just the kind of difference you'd expect out of such a seasoned professional. He slid in to dispossess Fabian Schar and win the ball for the Reds in a dangerous position. Diogo Jota slid the ball well for Naby Keita, who evaded all defenders and slotted in cooly to give his team the lead with less than 20 minutes on the clock.

The hosts managed to stay in the game thanks to a combination of hard work and luck, but they rarely looked likely to create any problems for Liverpool's back four.

The race goes on - and it's time for Pep Guardiola's side to show how they'll deal with the pressure.
