The US-based defender received his maiden call-up to the Harambee Stars squad that is currently in camp preparing for World Cup qualifiers against Gabon and Seychelles
In what seems to be a significant moment for Nabi Kibunguchy, the Orlando City B defender has expressed his joy and enthusiasm on receiving his first call-up to represent the Harambee Stars, Kenya's national football team.
For Kibunguchy, this opportunity holds special significance as he reconnects with his Kenyan heritage.
"It is my roots, my parents are from here, my grandparents, so I really wanted to go to my roots. I really love this country, and I really want to compete and just play for this part of the majority," shared Kibunguchy, highlighting the personal sentiment behind his decision to don the Kenyan national colors." He said,
Having honed his skills in the competitive environment of the United States soccer scene, the 25-year-old defender sees this call-up as a validation of the hard work and dedication he has invested in his professional career. "It is really good; it is just all the hard work that I have put in the last few years as a professional; it's really paying off into getting this call-up. I'm ready to contribute as much as I can and be involved in this group," he expressed with excitement.
Reflecting on his mindset, Kibunguchy stated, "I just want to immerse myself in the group as much as I can and just compete for a spot. Obviously, I know everything is possible because Coach Firat said the world is hard for a reason, so I am just here to compete. Whatever happens, it is his decision at the end of the day."
Harambee Stars coach Engin Firat is delighted to have the centerback in the team; "I have said many times that the Kenyan league, where ideally should be feeding the National team with players, is not aggresive enough. Nabi brings this aspect to my squad and I happy with that. He is also very good on the air, a good passer and has done very well in training so far," the tactician stated,
"He should have been with us for the friendly against Russia but he was sorting some documentation issues. We are happy to have him in the team, it is never too late," he added.
Born and brought up in the US by Kenyan parents, Nabi has previously played for Sacramento Republic and Minnesota United.
