Musical chairs as Ulinzi subject Vihiga to second consecutive loss

Four-time Women Premier League (WPL) champions Vihiga Queens were on Saturday 4 February subjected to their second defeat of the season in a five-goal thriller played at Mumias Complex. 

Playing Ulinzi Starlets, the defending champions opened the scoring through Sherleen Ikalakala in the 21st minute, much to the excitement of the home fans who were out to cheer their team back to winning ways. 

Vihiga’s lead was, however, short-lived as Ulinzi equalised in the 28th minute through Lucy Nato to level the match and set the stage for more fighting for the win. 

The visitors went ahead in the 41st minute with Joy Kinglady adding the second for the Joseph Wambua-coached military side who were out to break a two-match losing streak. 

On resumption, the two sides continued their fight and it was Vihiga’s efforts that got rewarded with a 58th minute equaliser as Ikalakala bagged his brace.

The match seemed to be headed for a two all stalemate before Sophy Adhiambo bagged the winner for Starlets in the 89th minute, subjecting Vihiga to their first home defeat and their second of the season. 

"It was a good match and I must congratulate my players for maintaining a fighting spirit for the comeback. 

The early goal was our wake up call as my players knew a third loss would have been detrimental to our title campaign. 

We stuck to our game plan and we're able to equalise fast which also helped the team yo regain confidence and fight for the win," offered coach Mwanza.
