Munro tips troubled Mathare United to return stronger

Mathare United chairman Bob Munro has assured that the club will redeem its image by punching its way back to life next season.

The 2008 league champions stand relegated from the top flight and the second leg results voided for failing to show up in the last three league matches thanks to dried financial taps.

Before the team dished its first walkover against Bandari, Munro, in a message seen by Mozzart Sport sent to the club’s WhatsApp group directed the players to down their tools until further notice.

Munro in a press statement revealed that the team had enough in their wallet to at least honour the remaining matches of the season but an injury to an unspecified player that required MRI scan coupled by other day-to-day expenses in running the office drained the club to the last coin.

The veteran administrator argued that the team had been rendered incapable of hosting or travelling for matches before the injury struck by a series of developments that included, the move by the federation to decline in renewing the deal between them and the Kenya Premier League Limited Company.

Further, he stated that the expansion of the league from sixteen teams to eighteen back in 2017 fueled the exit of SuperSport and thus, clubs were left with massive financial gaps.

He also alleged that the disruption of sporting activities by the coronavirus and the subsequent barring of fans from backing their favorite teams from the stands drove the final nail to their coffin.

Munro has however come out to allay fears that the club will sink into oblivion saying the slum boys will be back stronger starting next season. However, he did not state whether the team had accepted fate and would embrace second tier football.

“With the resilience of the slum communities we represent, our club aims to bounce back next season,” read part of the statement.
