The Bayern legend now plays in Canada but it could have been different
After 756 appearances for Bayern, 250 goals and 276 assists, it was time for Thomas Muller to leave Munich. It wasn‘t easy decision for the player who spent his entire life in his boyhood club, but the Bavarians simply didn‘t offer him a contact he was expecting and wanted him to retire and stay in the club immediately. Muller wanted to play more and eventually chose Vancouver Whitecaps from Canada. But in a recent interview, the former German international revealed he was hoping to get a call from his former boss Hansi Flick.
“I could have imagined a future in Barcelona. If Hansi Flick, who knows me very well, had called me and I had liked the project in Barcelona, I could have imagined something like this. FC Barcelona are a top club. People know what they expect of you” he revealed in an interview for Blickpunkt Sport. As we all know, a cash strapped Barcelona wasn‘t even thinking about it but rather relied on their own La Masia kids.
There were a lot of talks and debates about Muller‘s potential destination after Bavaria. He ended up in Canada and now admits that the second option was Sydney, Australia, and that his family ultimately made a choice.
"I said: ten-hour direct flight daily or 24 hours - and you have to go through three stops... 'Yes, then do Vancouver' - so the debate was quickly off the table, everyone agreed. When you come to Vancouver, you immediately get a positive feeling. You arrive in a beautiful city with lots of greenery, lots of water, and the mountains" said Muller.
