Mr. Glass

Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard became the first-ever player to be subbed off before the break in three consecutive EPL starts! But the Norwegian and injuries go way back...

In M. Night Shyamalan's Unbreakable trilogy, which consists of three movies - Unbreakable, Split, and Glass - there is a character named Elijah Price, aka Mr. Glass, who appears in the first and third parts and is portrayed by Samuel L. Jackson.

Mr. Glass is the main antagonist in the movies and is born with a rare condition called "osteogenesis imperfecta" or "brittle bone disease," characterized by bones that break easily, which significantly restricts his mobility, as any sudden movement can cause some severe injuries.

Unfortunately, a version of Jackson's character has appeared in football - specifically in the Premier League, more precisely in its leaders' ranks, at Arsenal. This real-life Mr. Glass is Martin Odegaard.

Of course, the Norwegian has no rare conditions or diseases - God forbid - but his injury proneness is simply uncanny.

Yesterday, he became the first-ever player to be subbed off before the break in three consecutive EPL starts - all for injuries!

On August 23, against Leeds, he picked up a shoulder injury, spending just 38 minutes on the pitch. Still, he came off the bench in the following round against Liverpool and clocked 136 minutes in Norway's two clashes at the beginning of September. He seemed fine.

Twenty days after the first shoulder problems, Odegaard started against Nottingham Forest and aggravated the injury, clocking just 18 minutes. He was sidelined for three matches, but then returned, recorded an assist in just nine minutes on the pitch against Newcastle, and played the entire UCL duel against Olympiacos, being the best Gunners' player. Everyone at Emirates was delighted to see him up and running, but alas...

Yesterday against West Ham, his "dance" continued, as he was a constant and ever-present danger to the Hammers' goal. And then it happened again. A knee collision with Crysencio Summerville, pain, disbelief. He tried to continue playing, but he couldn't. At the half-hour mark, he was replaced by Martin Zubimendi.

After the match, Mikel Arteta revealed Odegaard's condition.

"I just spoke to him. He's not positive about it."

And how could he be positive? The season started a month and a half ago, and this was already his third injury!

Last season, he missed the most critical part of Arsenal's title race due to an ankle injury he picked up on international duty. The season before, he had a hip issue. After all, his knee troubles go way back to his second season with Real Madrid Castilla when he was only 18!

Luckily for Arsenal, their squad is more quality-packed than ever before under Arteta, so the Spaniard will have decent alternatives to replace the skipper. But looking from Odegaard's perspective, this situation is terrible - both physically and mentally.

Still, he is the captain of one of the biggest clubs in the world and one of the most creative players in today's football (when he's injury-free), while his team has finally sat at the top of the Premier League table. If that's not a good enough motive to fight to recover as soon as possible, then nothing is.

He may be Mr. Glass at the moment, but Arsenal need him. So, he'll just need to forget about the third, skip the second, return to the first part of Shyamalan's trilogy, and become - Unbreakable.
