The highly rated attacker joined Yanga on a three-year deal from Uganda Premier League champions Vipers FC, bringing an end to the speculations about his future.
According to multiple sources in Ugandan media, Yanga paid Vipers $300,000 (approximately Ksh38.8 million) in transfer fees for Okello, who had six months remaining in his contract.
Apart from the money paid to Vipers, Yanga reportedly paid Okello a sign-on fee of $100,000 (approximately Ksh12.9 million) and will pay him $15,000 (approximately Ksh1.9 million) in salary.
With the salary, the 25-year-old will earn $180,000 (approximately Ksh23.2 million) per year and a total of $540,000 (approximately Ksh69.7 million) for the duration of his contract.
Okello is also expected to earn more from other performance-related bonuses like winning allowances, which would further add to his earnings.
Yanga had been pursuing Okello for a while and reportedly tabled a bid of $500,000 (approximately Ksh64.5 million), which was rejected by Vipers as the club still needed his services for their CAF Champions League (CAF CL) campaign.
With Vipers out of the CAF CL and six months remaining in Okello’s contract, the club decided to cash in on the red-hot midfielder.
Okello’s move becomes the second most expensive sale by Vipers since the transfer of Ugandan international Farouk Miya to Belgian side Standard Liege in 2016 for a reported fee of $400,000 (approximately Ksh51.6 million).
However, the figure is higher than the $200,000 (approximately Ksh 25.8 million) the club received for the sale of Cesar Manzoki to Chinese club Dalian Pro FC in August 2022.
At Yanga, Okello is expected to help the club compete in the CAF CL and qualify for the quarter-final, where they are currently second in Group B with 4 points, the same as group leaders Al Ahly.
