Milestone for Thierry: The legendary Frenchman will lead Belgium as head coach on Sunday

It's all thanks to Roberto Martinez's suspension

Legendary goalscorer Thierry Henry has been progressing steadily in his new coaching role, and it seems only a matter of time before he takes over a top-level club as a head coach. But in the meantime, he'll get a taste of the job with the Belgian national team.

Although only one of Roberto Martinez's assistants, Henry will be leading the team as head coach in Sunday's UEFA Nations League game against the Netherlands because the Spaniard will be suspended for the red card he received in the win over Wales on Thursday night.

The Belgian Federation won't appeal the decision of Ali Palabryik, the Turkish referee who ejected Martinez for time-wasting. While the Spanish coach will be in the stands, Thierry Henry will be on the bench accompanied by two other assistants, Anthony Barry and Thomas Vermaelen, the former international defender who recently joined the staff.

The 45-year-old former Arsenal, Barcelona and Monaco star told L'Equipe last year that he no longer watches football matches as a player. In his mind, he's now 100% coach.

"I watch football as a coach, always! I don't look at the ball. I look at the 22 players. I don't follow individuals but rather the whole to see what is going on from a tactical perspective. I scan the game and determine where it will be won or lost. Sometimes I get it wrong, of course. The manager can change something, or there can be an error. But there are obvious things at the start of a game which end up being true."

This will be the start of something big.
