The Milan club will face Bari in the Coppa Italia, but without their new coach

After a disappointing finish in Serie A last season, AC Milan kick off their Coppa Italia campaign in the first round with a clash against Bari at San Siro on Sunday.

The 2024-25 season was turbulent for the Rossoneri. Despite lifting the Supercoppa Italiana and reaching the Coppa Italia final, Milan endured a rocky campaign, cycling through two Portuguese managers—Paulo Fonseca and Sergio Conceicao—and ultimately finishing a lowly eighth in the league. Their European ambitions also faltered, as they were eliminated from the Champions League by Feyenoord and lost the Coppa Italia final to Bologna.

Change was inevitable. Massimiliano Allegri has returned to take the reins at San Siro, bringing fresh leadership to the seven-time European champions. On the field, Real Madrid legend Luka Modric has joined to provide additional control in midfield.

Milan’s pre-season included high-profile friendlies in the Far East against Liverpool and Arsenal, followed by a 9-0 demolition of Perth Glory. Last week, they faced another Premier League double-header, drawing 1-1 with Leeds United in Dublin before suffering a 4-1 defeat at Stamford Bridge to Chelsea, going two goals and a man down within 20 minutes.

Now, competitive action resumes as Milan aim to capture their sixth Coppa Italia—and their first since 2003—before hosting newly promoted Cremonese in Serie A six days later.

Bari, meanwhile, have had their own rollercoaster in recent seasons. After narrowly missing out on Serie A promotion in 2023 and scraping survival last year, the club finished just four points outside Serie B’s playoff spots.

The mid-table finish led to the dismissal of Moreno Longo, with Fabio Caserta taking over at Stadio San Nicola. Caserta, who guided Catanzaro to the playoffs last season, will hope to replicate that success with Bari after a promising pre-season.

Before opening their league campaign against newly relegated Venezia, Bari must travel north to San Siro, facing Milan for the first time in 14 years since their last Serie A encounter at the iconic stadium.
