McKinstry puts pressure on McCarthy with a demolition of Seychelles

The Scorpions had no trouble against the worst African nation in the qualifiers

It was never a question if The Gambia would win against Seychelles in the last round of the World Qualifiers. The Pirates are the worst African team in qualifications with no points and even a draw in today‘s match would be a big surprise against The Scorpions. In the end, it was 7-0 for Johnny McKinstry’s men in Mauritius, where the game took place, who won the reverse match 5-1 in June last year. McKinstry’s men have now notched 27 goals in the campaign – the second-highest tally in Group F – while conceding 18, with only Seychelles shipping more in the section.

This win couldn‘t change anything regarding the World Cup qualifications, but former Gor Mahia boss managed two things: he ended his season with a win and he put a bit of pressure on Harembee Stars Benny McCharty. If Kenya doesn‘t win tonight against group leaders Ivory Coast, or if they don‘t at least draw, the Scorpions will finish ahead of them in Group F. After the 7-1 win, The Gambia has 13 points (one more than Kenya) and a goal difference +2, which is the first thing rule to be looked at in case two teams finish with the same number of points.

The first goal was scored after only two minutes and since McKinstry decided to leave his two best players Yankuba Minteh (Brighton) and Musa Barrow (Al-Taauwon) on the bench, Adama Sidibeh was the one to lead the team with a brace (2nd and 46th minute). Mjallby‘s Abdoulie Manneh scored a hat-trick from midfield (75th, 67th and 24th minute) before Musa Barrow came in and scored a brace himself (52nd and 47th). Needless to say, the Scorpions had another three of for excellent chances to make it 10-0, but the shots were either saved or went over the bar.
