France captain reaches a century of appearances against Iraq tonight
One of the most captivating storylines of this World Cup is unfolding not in a single stadium, but across the tournament itself.
While national teams battle for football's greatest prize, some of the game's biggest stars are engaged in personal races of their own. Few are more compelling than the one involving France's Kylian Mbappe and Argentina's Lionel Messi, two icons separated by a generation but united by an insatiable appetite for goals.
Tonight, Mbappe will take centre stage once again when France face Iraq in their second Group I match.
The encounter carries significance beyond the three points on offer. It will mark the Real Madrid superstar's 100th appearance for France, a milestone reached by only nine players before him.
It is a remarkable company.
Only Hugo Lloris, Lilian Thuram, Antoine Griezmann, Olivier Giroud, Thierry Henry, Marcel Desailly, Zinedine Zidane, Patrick Vieira and current head coach Didier Deschamps have crossed the century mark for Les Bleus. Deschamps himself sits only three appearances ahead on 103 caps, a figure Mbappe is destined to surpass sooner rather than later.
Yet personal milestones are only part of the story.
Mbappe arrives at his landmark appearance carrying the hopes of a nation and chasing a place in World Cup immortality. His two goals against Senegal in France's opening 3-1 victory took his tally at World Cups to 14, reinforcing his status as perhaps the most dangerous tournament player of his generation.
The problem for Mbappe is that Messi refuses to stand still. The Argentine legend responded with a hat-trick against Algeria, moving onto 16 World Cup goals and drawing level with German great Miroslav Klose at the top of the all-time scoring charts.
The stage is now set for a fascinating duel that could define the remainder of the tournament. Messi, who turns 39 in the coming days, is chasing one final chapter in an extraordinary career. Mbappe, still only 27, is hunting records that many believed would stand forever.
"I always knew Messi would score goals," Mbappe said. "He always does. He's ahead of me at the moment, but I'll keep scoring to help the team go as far as possible. Of course, goals help with records, but my first objective is to win the World Cup."
Those words carry extra weight considering Mbappe's own painful World Cup memories. He lifted the trophy in Russia in 2018, then produced one of the greatest performances ever seen in a World Cup final four years later, scoring a hat-trick against Argentina in Qatar. It still was not enough, as France fell on penalties after an unforgettable 3-3 draw.
Now he has another opportunity to chase history.
Should France reach the final once again, Mbappe would become only the third player ever to appear in three consecutive World Cup finals, matching a feat most famously achieved by Brazilian legend Cafu between 1994 and 2002.
For now, however, France's focus is on securing their place in the knockout rounds.
Victory over Iraq would all but guarantee qualification and continue the impressive start made against Senegal. Mbappe insists that it remains the priority despite the individual accolades and records that continue to pile up around him.
"There is no greater privilege than playing for your national team," he said. "My 100th match will be special, but we need the victory. That's the first thing on my mind."
France are expected to be without midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni from the starting line-up after he missed the final training session before the game, while defender William Saliba admitted he is not yet fully fit.
The Arsenal centre-back also warned against underestimating Iraq.
"We watched their game against Norway. They have a good team," Saliba said. "People think it's an easy three points, but there are no easy matches at this tournament."
Iraq coach Graham Arnold attempted to lighten the mood when asked how his side planned to stop Mbappe.
"I asked whether we could play with three goalkeepers," he joked. "They told me we couldn't."
