Matteo loves Osimhen so much that he doesn't mind losing his job just to talk to his favourite footballer

Match steward wanted a selfie with the Nigerian striker - but it came at a price

Teenage lad Matteo Lo Cicero lost his gig as match steward at Roma after his ill-fated decision to ask Napoli striker Victor Osimhen for a selfie following the two teams' Serie A meeting last weekend.

The problem wasn't his love for the Nigerian striker but the breach in the discipline. According to stewards' contracts, they are strictly prohibited from speaking or interacting with footballers before, during and after games. However, Matteo couldn't help himself when he got the chance to talk to Osimhen.

"I'm obsessed with him", he admitted.

As a result, the 18-year-old will no longer be able to work during Roma matches at the Olimpico. All for having allowed himself a selfie with his hero. Lo Cicero was tasked to monitor the area reserved for players' families while the players left the stadium. In the wake of the match, he approached Nigerian journalist Oma Akatugba to ensure he was cleared for access in that area. But when the journalist said he was Osimhen's friend, the Italian lad realized that this was his chance to get up close and personal with the talented striker.

Osimhen chatted with Tammy Abraham before approaching the boy and asking him if he enjoyed the match. The young man took out his smartphone to show the Nigerian how much he cared for him.

"My hands were shaking. My dream had come true. I showed Victor all the photos and videos of him I had in my phone, and he really enjoyed it. I'm obsessed with him. I'm always looking for hidden anecdotes. He even got excited looking at my 18th birthday cake."

To ruin a magical moment, however, Lo Cicero's boss arrived and ordered him to return his equipment and leave. The reason? Talking to a player is a violation of the rules. The episode left Osimhen stunned. He even tried to defend the boy.

"He is my brother. He is here with me. Why are you doing this?".

The player asked how much the boy was being paid and, after witnessing his dismissal, committed to finding him a new job.

In the meantime Matteo will be able to continue working as a steward, but not during Roma matches. Since he wasn't employed by the Roman club but by another company, he will be able to continue to work during Serie A games - just not those in which Jose Mourinho's team play as hosts.

If you ask Matteo, it was worth it. He may have lost his job, but he got to share a moment with his favourite player. That has to count as a good day at work!
