Mathare are scheduled to play the struggling MCF this weekend

Mathare United skipper Godfrey Rabar has explained the inspiration behind the team's positive start in the National Super League as the former top flight tops the second-tier table after seven rounds.

United, who were relegated at the end of last season, are placed at the top with 16 points, one ahead of the second-ranked Kisumu All Stars, who have played an extra game.

The Slum Boys were relegated alongside the Vihiga Bullets, but there are signs of the former gaining promotion to the table of men if their form is anything to go by.

Rabar, who was appointed captain following the exit of Khalid Jumaan, revealed that the unity in the team was the force behind their good start.

"We are working as a unit. There is chemistry between the players and the technical bench. You can feel the energy levels and understanding between players and coaches in the team," said Rabar.

Football pundits opine that it is too early to declare Mathare a clear favourite for promotion given the competitive nature of the second tier.

However, Rabar, who predominantly plays as a centre-back, said it was possible to land one of the two automatic promotion slots if the team approached a game at a time and had the determination to win.

The former Eastleigh Youth player who joined Mathare last year asked his teammates to treat the remaining 31 matches as finals so they could return to the top flight.

"We have a long way to go, but everything is possible if we remain focused. We only need to take every game as a final," he added.

Mathare are scheduled to play the struggling MCF this weekend, where they will be hunting for their sixth win of the season.

MCF bagged their first win of the campaign last weekend, beating Migori Youth 1-0 at the Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos.
