In the friendly match between Preston and Liverpool, everything unfolded as a heartfelt tribute to the recently deceased Diogo Jota

In their first outing since the tragic loss of Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva, Liverpool returned to the field with emotion, unity, and a series of tributes that honored their fallen teammate in deeply personal ways.

Facing Preston in a pre-season friendly at Deepdale, the Reds secured a 3-1 win—but the result took a back seat to the atmosphere of remembrance. A minute’s silence, perfectly observed, preceded kick-off. Liverpool’s anthem, You’ll Never Walk Alone, echoed through the stadium, and Preston’s captain Benjamin Whiteman laid a wreath before the away stand in a touching gesture of solidarity.

Throughout the match, the memory of Jota—who tragically passed away in a car accident in Spain on July 3 at just 28—was never far from view.

Darwin Nunez and Cody Gakpo, who both shared the pitch with Jota more than 50 times, honored him with their goal celebrations. Nunez, after making it 2-0 early in the second half, pointed to the sky and recreated Jota’s signature “PlayStation” move. Later, Gakpo added Liverpool’s third and followed it with Jota’s trademark celebration, a quiet but powerful moment that resonated with both teammates and supporters.

As full-time approached, Liverpool’s players joined in applauding the traveling fans, who responded with chants dedicated to Jota. Around the stadium, digital tributes lit up the screens, and all players wore black armbands in mourning.

The club further commemorated Jota with a special 16-page matchday program featuring a black-and-white image of him lifting the Premier League trophy. Scarves and flags bearing his name were sold outside the stadium, while the most lasting tribute came with Liverpool’s official announcement: Jota’s No. 20 shirt will be retired, ensuring his legacy lives on.

Jota joined Liverpool in 2020 from Wolves and made a significant impact over his 182 appearances, scoring 65 goals and registering 26 assists. His passion for football extended beyond the pitch—he was also known for his love of FIFA (now EAFC), often competing in online tournaments.
