Marseille are paying more for not playing Nwaneri

Coach Habib Beye doesn't care about the money and thinks Arsenal's loanee is still not good for the first team

The title of this article sounds like a mistake, but it’s not. Marseille is actually loosing money for not playing Ethan Nwaneri, but coach Habib Beye focused solely on the performance on the pitch (and in training) and so far, Nwaneri is not showing enough. Arsenal’s promising star went on a loan to the south of France in January, in order to get more playing time, considering that this club has strengthened during June 2025 and playing time became extremely limited.

When signed by former manager Roberto De Zerbi, Nwaneri started immediately and scored on his debut against Lens and then started two more matches, against Paris and PSG. After a 5-0 humiliation, De Zerbi left and Habib Beye took over. Nwaneri has been left on the bench in three of the following eight fixtures, and has only once made an appearance lasting longer than half an hour - against Lille on 22 March.

L'Equipe claims that the Englishman had given a 'persistent impression of nonchalance' since he came to his new club and also revealed that his loan fee is actually tied to his amount of minutes. So, in a bizzare twist, Marseille are paying more money to Arsenal since Nwaneri is not playing, which is terrible for both the player and the club, but Beye obviously doesn’t see him as a first team player, no matter the money involved. Surely, De Zerbi’s departure only worsened his position. The Italian manager is well known for his development of young players, which was also confirmed by Mikel Areta himself recently. On the other side is Habib Beye who came in a difficult time and is trying hard to get Marseille into that third spot in Ligue 1, which means results come first, and not player development.
