Manchester safe from relegation thanks to Arsenal's win

Reading Time: 3min | Sun. 20.04.25. | 18:25

The Gunners defeated Ipswich easily and are still second under Liverpool

Arsenal had three days of rest after facing Real Madrid and had to quickly return to the pitch for a domestic league match. When you beat Real in the Spanish capital and reach the Champions League semi-finals for only the third time in club history, it's hard to find motivation for a league game — especially when the title is already out of reach and the opponent is a team virtually relegated, just waiting for the math to confirm it. Mikel Arteta found a way to motivate his team for this match as well, and his side routinely defeated Ipswich away — 0:4 (0:2). With five rounds to go, Liverpool are 10 points ahead with a game in hand, while Arsenal lead Newcastle by seven, City by eight, and Nottingham Forest and Aston Villa by nine points each.

The visitors struck early, in the 14th minute. After a quick attack, Odegaard played a long through ball and found Saka, who returned it from the right side. The Norwegian then laid it off about seven meters out for Trossard, who scored while falling. Gabriel Martinelli doubled the lead in the 28th minute. The Brazilian scored his 50th goal in an Arsenal shirt, becoming the fourth-youngest player to reach that milestone at 23 years and 306 days. Only Bukayo Saka, Cesc Fabregas, and Theo Walcott achieved it at a younger age. Martinelli scored six goals last season and has seven this season. Once again, Saka broke down the right wing and crossed into the six-yard box, where Merino flicked it with his heel to Martinelli for an easy goal.

Just four minutes later, Davis made a horrible tackle that nearly broke Saka’s leg, and Ipswich were reduced to ten men — at that point, it was clear the home team stood no chance. Thankfully, Saka wasn’t injured, but he left the game in the 58th minute, as Arteta didn’t want to take any more risks. The second half resembled a training match, with the only question being how many more goals Arsenal would score. Trossard scored again in the 70th minute, and the final touch came in the 88th when Ethan Nwaneri added his name to the scoresheet.
