The Red Devils will face consequences if they fail to qualilfy for the Champions League
Manchester United experienced as many as five defeats in the first 12 rounds of the Premier League, has a negative goal difference, and there is no doubt that a fierce fight for the Champions League awaits them. Any failure to play in the elite carries a huge loss. First of all, it damages the club’s reputation as one of the biggest in the world, and then it affects the recruitment strategy, as top players are often persuaded by the chance to play in Europe’s top competition. Finally, and maybe most importantly (especially if you are a part of the Glazer family), there are financial problems. The club from Old Trafford could pay serious penalties from the 2025/26 season if it is not a regular in the elite competition. And that is regulated by the contract with Adidas.
The German sports equipment manufacturer demanded that a clause be inserted into the agreement, according to which Manchester will have to pay 10,000,000 pounds every year they fail to qualify for the Champions League. At the time when the contract was put together by both sides, the Old Trafford brass was probably laughing at this clause, but if we look at the current season, nobody is laughing anymore. Bearing in mind that the contract was signed for 10 years, the penalties could potentially be as high as 100,000,000 pounds.
Of course, this is a figure that would hit any club, even the richest ones, but it should not be forgotten that according to this new agreement, Manchester United should receive an incredible 900,000,000 pounds from Adidas for those ten years! For the previous period, from 2015 to 2025, the Red Devils collected 750,000,000 pounds for a similar deal. Since that contract was signed, Manchester has missed out on three appearances in the Champions League. When we talk about the penalties that may be waiting for United from 2025, it could cost them dearly if, say, they do not enter the Champions League twice in a row. Then he would have to pay 25,000,000 million. There are, of course, bonuses. For each domestic or international trophy, the Germans will pay an additional 4,400,000 pounds over those already agreed 900,000,000.
