Manchester United reach Europa League final despite a 3-2 loss

There was no dilemma about who wins the two-leg tie after 6-2 trashing at Old Trafford, but Red Devils were eager to show the class again (2-2)

No one believed in a miracle, and guess what - it didn't happen in Rome. Manchester United were determined to win it again and prove that 6-2 at Old Trafford was not a coincidence or a matter of luck. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's dominated from the first moment of the game, but a dreadful defensive performance in the second half led to a 3-2 defeat (8-5 on aggregate for United). Despite that loss, the Red Devils reach the UEFA Europa League final and will play against Villareal, who eliminated Arsenal.

This semifinal encounter won't be remembered for good defence, that's for sure. As many as 13 conceded goals prove that definitely.

Cavani was the first to engage in front of Roma's goal 20 minutes into the game, but his inside-the-area lob hit the crossbar, although it seemed like the Uruguayan was way too relax taking the shot.

That was not the case a few minutes later when he once again came one-on-one with the keeper after lovely Bruno's deep pass. It was a powerful strike, but Mirante saved it.

Roma found its pace near the half-time whistle, but despite De Gea's sluggish reactions, Pellegrini, Mancini (twice) and Dzeko were never near scoring from the close range.

Unlike them, Cavani is the striker of the finest composure and skill, so he can't miss more than two excellent opportunities. When the third came - and it was the result of Bruno's and Fred's quick ball exchange - Cavani smashed it in the back of the net for 1-0. If there was any dilemma about the winner of this two-leg tie prior to this goal, United voided it.

Paulo Fonseca, who's counting his last days in Roma's dugout before the Jose Mourinho arrival, gave his guys a half-time pep-talk resulting in a decent improvement of the home side. Firstly, Dzeko equalised with a header following Pedro's sharp cross.

The fuss was already in the air when Cristante's strike outsmarted De Gea for a total comeback and a 2-1 lead for the home team.

That lead gave the Italians lots of strength and inspiration to create two more wonderful chances, but both Dzeko and Pellegrini were not fortunate enough to nail it from only a few yards. Who knows what could have happened if at least one of those plays ended with a goal. Instead, United managed to get a grip, especially after Matic came in for deplorable Pogba.

Soon after, it was Greenwood with a splendid opportunity to bring the game back in the stalemate, but the young winger was slightly imprecise. What he missed, Cavani didn't.

Once again, Bruno stepped up with a brilliant assist and the Uruguayan netted with some style.

Roma wasn't in the mood of surrender, but, in truth, they didn't have enough luck, either. It was Mkhitaryan who hit the right post of De Gea's goal near the last 15 minutes.

Jose Mourinho can be satisfied with his new outfit, because he'll have some intersting prospects to work with at Olimpico Stadium. One of them is definitely Nicola Zalewski, whose volley brought a much-deserved victory to Roma, and plenty of hope for the future, even without UEL final to be played in Gdansk on 26 May.
